Roommates

Yes, certainly. Here's how to find a roommate and confirm a match. If you already know who you want to live with, jump to step 5.

  1. Apply: Complete your housing application. Login to using your Calvin username and password.
  2. Profile: Under "Housing," select "My roommate profile" and turn on your profile. Select the information you want visible to other applicants.
  3. Search: Select "Roommate Search." Each option listed is a possible filter. Check back often as more students complete their application.
  4. Contact: Found a potential match? Click "Send contact request" to see if you might be a good roommate pair!
  5. Create Group: Once you've decided on a match, select "Roommate groups" to invite that person using their Calvin email. A green check mark next to each name means you're matched!

Approximately two-thirds of our first-year students have us match them with a roommate. We use a specialized computer program, as well as our own expertise, in making matches. The computer takes the information you enter on your housing application and matches people who have similar interests and lifestyles. We check all matches and make many of them ourselves.听

Getting your application to us on time is helpful, as late applications tend to have fewer open roommates for us to work with.听

Most roommate matches work out fine, as long as roommates have realistic expectations and always communicate, cooperate, and compromise.

For students with Priority Housing status (applications received by May 1), roommate contact information will be sent out in early July via email (at your new Calvin email address). For all other students, roommate information will be sent in early August, along with your building assignment. You'll find out who your suitemates are when you move in.

Our policy is that first-years and sophomores are not typically assigned single rooms unless they have been approved through Disability Services. If you have a documented disability and need specific housing accommodations, we are here to help. Please reach out to Disability Services 补迟鈥disabilityservices@calvin.edu鈥痮r call 616-526-6155 to connect with a disability coordinator. They will work with you to review your request and determine the best accommodations to support your needs.听

Residence Halls and Apartments

View current costs and compare other details of Calvin's on-campus housing options on our Housing Costs page.

Sorry鈥攚e can't take these types of requests for new students. If you are returning student, see the room draw information below.听

If you have specific issues or needs, please indicate them in the "Additional Comments" section of your housing application.听

We intentionally avoid placing groups of high school friends together on one floor or in one building and we do not typically allow students to choose suitemates. We've found that by randomizing placements, our communities end up being stronger and more diverse, and our students tend to agree.

Current students who plan to live on campus next year must complete the fall housing application. The form can be found on the eRez Life dashboard: . We'll notify you of your placement by early March.

We will make assignments in order of priority:

  1. Current residents of a room who remain as roommates have first priority to that room.
  2. Current residents of the same floor (different rooms) who become roommates for next fall will have second priority to open rooms on that floor.
  3. Current residents of the same building (on different floors) who become roommates for next fall will have third priority on either of their two floors where they currently live.
  4. Current residents of the same floor who become roommates but want to move to a different floor will have fourth priority to open rooms on the other floors, behind current residents on that floor.
  5. A resident of one building who wishes to room with someone from a different hall will have fifth priority to open rooms in either of their two floors.
  6. Students wishing to room with a specific transfer student or incoming first-year student in the current student鈥檚 building will have sixth priority to their current floor. Other floors in the building may be necessary, or other buildings altogether. If your intended roommate does not enroll, you will be reassigned by the housing office.
  7. Two residents who become roommates and wish to move to an entirely different building will have eighth priority to open rooms in that building.
  8. A resident who has not formed a roommate group and will be matched with a roommate by the housing office. The goal will be to keep one or both residents in the building of their choice but moves may be necessary to create a good match.

Students will always have the opportunity to return to the same building next year depending on roommate choice and as long as they follow the process outlined. For van Reken hall, you must reapply and be accepted to return to your floor. For living-learning floors in van Reken Hall, you must reapply and be accepted to return to your floor. Students who want to guarantee that they will be able to return to their current building should select a roommate from their current building. Students who want to guarantee that they will be able to return to their current floor should select a roommate from their current floor.

Email housing@calvin.edu If you have any questions or would like to appeal your placement.

We have floors reserved for juniors and seniors interested in living in the residence halls.听

Or you can contact us to request to live on a traditional floor that includes first and second-year students.

Review moving-in procedures, packing lists, and a digital guide on our Moving In page.

Maintaining a healthy environment for living and learning is an important part of residence life at Calvin. A variety of 鈥済reen鈥 cleaning supplies for personal cleaning are available to residents on their floor and also at the front desk of their hall, where they can also be recycled and refilled. Toilet paper is available free of charge at the front reception desk.听

All suitemates are responsible for keeping the shared bathroom clean and healthy.

Health, safety, and bathroom checks are conducted in December and April to ensure compliance with health standards.听

You will find out your assigned hall when roommate and housing information is sent at the beginning of August, and you'll find out your room number when you arrive in the fall (specific room assignments sometimes change at the last minute).

Our on-campus housing is most suitable for traditional age undergraduate students (ages 17鈥22). However, if you are outside of this age range, you may apply for on-campus housing. We may request an interview in order to find the best available housing option. Placement of younger students will be done in coordination with parents or guardians. Additional housing options may exist for older students.

We do not offer鈥痬arried鈥痵tudent鈥痟ousing. However, Calvin鈥痵tudents can reach out to Calvin Seminary to inquire if they have any available apartments that may suit your needs. If that doesn鈥檛 work out, we recommend exploring off-campus housing options in the area.听

Moving Out

Cleaning supplies are available on each floor. Items for use are all purpose cleaner, disinfectant, restroom cleaner (toilet bowl cleaner), toilet brushes, magic erasers, and disposable microfiber cloths. Razors must be checked out during desk hours. Please return all bottles and razors for the next resident to use.

You must clean and check out of your dorm or apartment by 10 a.m. on the Friday after exams. After that, the Residence Life staff will be checking rooms to ensure compliance (cleanliness and damage). Failure to check out properly or have your room properly deep cleaned will result in a fine and cleaning charges of up to $200 per person.

If you need transitional or summer housing, apply at and visit our Break Housing page.

Check-out requriements and information (2025):

Self check-out forms:

Please make sure all areas are clean and complete before filling out this checkout form.

The halls close at 10 a.m. on Friday after exams.

We encourage you to think ahead. We have found that students who plan ahead have no problem finishing their cleaning and packing after their exams. There are no Thursday evening exams, so that should help significantly. Bathroom checks will be the week before finals while all suitemates are still on campus.

No. As shown in the check out procedure, the cleaning responsibilities are divided up among the residents of the suite so no one is stuck cleaning more than their fair share.

A community chore is one task that is given to you in addition to cleaning your own room. Examples include: wiping down the outside of coffee kitchen fridge with a rag and cleaner, bringing any dining hall dishes to the lobby, mopping the laundry room, etc. By having all students contribute in small ways, we prepare the building for summer use in a stewardly and efficient manner.

You can store items over the summer in the trunk room of your building. If you are changing buildings, you can choose to store your belongings in the building you are leaving OR the building you will be moving into in the fall.听

Please note that furniture cannot be stored in the trunk rooms. Make sure your items are in boxes or bins (no loose items) and that they are labeled with a PINK label (located in trunk rooms) including your name and contact information.

Summer and Break Housing

Yes, you can stay on campus during school breaks if you register ahead at .听

You'll be able to stay in your current placement but must still apply at . Visit our Break Housing page for details.

Yes! Whether you only need transitional housing through graduation weekend, or you need housing throughout the summer, apply at .听

Check our Break Housing page for details about costs and dates.

Current students and graduates can stay in the KE Apartments for the summer and pay by day, week, or the full summer. You must apply at .听

If you're working on campus, you can receive a 20% discount on the full summer cost.

Capacity is four people to an apartment. You can request specific roommates in the application.

Visit our Break Housing page for details about application deadlines, late application fees, payment, and dates.

We don鈥檛 offer single rooms in the summer unless they have been approved through Disability Services. Please mention this on your summer housing application. To鈥痬inimize鈥痬oves, we do our best to get you into your current placement for the summer. However, there are many moving parts and that doesn't always work out.

Even if you are staying in the same apartment for the summer, you are still required to complete the checkout process before "officially" checking into your apartment for the summer.

You would need to fully move out all of your鈥痓elongings鈥痑nd complete a checkout if you wanted to cancel the weeks in between your stays.听

If you or your鈥痓elongings鈥痳emain, you are still considered a resident and will be charged for your time there. Payment is based on when you check in (you and/or your鈥痓elongings) and when you check out.听

Keep in mind that the full summer rate is a bit of a discount to the weekly rate. For full details, check out our Break Housing page.

If you are living in KE for the summer and also serving as an Entrada RA, you have a couple of options regarding housing:

  1. Completely move out of your KE apartment during the month you are serving as an Entrada RA. You would pay the weekly rate instead of the full summer rate. However, you would not be eligible for the 20% on campus job discount.听
  2. Keep your things in your KE apartment while you are serving as an Entrada RA and pay for the full summer. You would then be eligible for the 20% 聽on campus job discount. Depending on your stay in the apartments, it might actually be cheaper to go this route.听

You can make adjustments to your Summer Housing Application by going to calvin.erezlife.com and on the LEFT side of you screen, under Housing, select Summer 2025 and then select click here to edit your application.听

We only offer summer housing options for current or graduating Calvin students.听

If you have questions about Summer Intern Housing, you can reach out to venues@calvin.edu.

Living Off-Campus

You are welcome to put up an 8.5x11 flyer on the鈥痓ulletin鈥痓oards鈥痩ocated just outside of the campus store in the Commons building, which is located across the parking lot from the Covenant Fine Arts Center (CFAC). This is where we send any students who are looking for off-campus options.听

While we don't provide direct help finding off-campus housing, you can search online or view postings on the bulletin board outside of the campus store.听

Please review and abide by the Off-Campus Living Policy.

All Calvin students, including off-campus students, are expected to abide by the Student Conduct Code and may be subject to university action in addition to any civil, legal, or contractual action.
