Symphonic Band is a concert band that performs traditional and contemporary literature in multiple concerts per semester, both on campus as well as in local schools, churches, and retirement communities.

Membership is open to Calvin students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members with high school band experience.

• History

  In 1980, Professor Derald De Young formed another music ensemble: Knollcrest Band. This addition meant that Calvin was the only private university in Michigan to support another separate, independent concert band. 

  Dr. Tiffany Engle was appointed conductor of Knollcrest Band in 2005. After four additional years of continued growth and stability, Knollcrest Band became known as Symphonic Band, a title that better reflects its purpose and function. Today, Symphonic Band is one of two Calvin ensembles devoted to the combination of woodwind, brass, and percussion instrubments. Unlike Wind Ensemble, which adheres to the model of a smaller, more flexible instrumentation, Symphonic Band assumes the role of a larger ensemble.

  Starting in the fall of 2019, Symphonic Band extended an invitation to non-students, involving diverse musicians from Calvin and the surrounding communities. In essence, Symphonic Band wonderfully reflects life-long musicianship by offering a space where everyone (student, faculty, staff, alumni, community) can enjoy the opportunity to make meaningful music.
