Keynote Speaker: Michaela Stenerson

Michaela Stenerson grew up in Grove City, Ohio and graduated from Taylor University in 2021 with a B.S. in Sustainable Development. Frequent visits to her grandparents' property in the forested hills of eastern Ohio sparked her love for the outdoors as a child. It wasn鈥檛 until college that she became confronted with the disconnect between the way God loves his creation and the way we as humans often treat it. Throughout her studies she gained a passion for sustainability and served as a fellow with Young Evangelicals for Climate Action on her university鈥檚 campus.

Since graduation, Michaela has gained experience in permaculture, conservation, and environmental education through organizations including A Rocha USA. This is where she became acquainted with the marine environment in which she now works. Since 2024, she has taught as an Education Specialist at the Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach, Florida where she leads hands on, feet wet programming for youth of all ages in the Indian River Lagoon. Michaela's work is one piece in a larger puzzle of restoration for this imperiled estuary of national importance. She is so excited to share her experience and encourage other young people in their journeys towards faithful stewardship!"

What is the FAST Conference about?

鈥淢eeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.鈥

This quote from the 1987 United Nations Brundtland Commission is one of the earliest and best-known definitions of sustainability as we think of it today. How does it mesh with these other quotes?

  • The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 鈥 Genesis 2:15
  • Throughout the country that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption of the land. 鈥 Leviticus 25:24
  • The earth is the LORD鈥檚 and everything in it. 鈥 Psalm 24:1
  • Love the LORD your God will all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength... Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. 鈥 Mark 12:30-31

At Calvin, we view the call to achieving sustainability not as one that originates from any person or group, but from the Creator of the universe. To meet these needs of today and tomorrow, we know that there are things we must stop doing, and there are things we need to do quickly. We need to fast, and to be fast.
