How does language contact influence syntax (specifically, word order) in the early stages of formation of a new speech community? North Carolina is an appropriate place to consider this question because only in the past few decades have significant Spanish-speaking communities come into being in U.S. states with two-word names whose standard Spanish equivalent uses a different word order than in English (e.g. Carolina del Norte). Do speakers use the standard Spanish variant, English word order, or something else? Come find out!
