Associate Professor of Spanish, Scott G. Lamanna, PhD will present How Colombians and Mexicans in the Piedmont Triad Refer to North Carolina in Spanish

How does language contact influence syntax (specifically, word order) in the early stages of formation of a new speech community? North Carolina is an appropriate place to consider this question because only in the past few decades have significant Spanish-speaking communities come into being in U.S. states with two-word names whose standard Spanish equivalent uses a different word order than in English (e.g. Carolina del Norte). Do speakers use the standard Spanish variant, English word order, or something else? Come find out!
