A mid-season Chimes opinion piece about the 1927–28 team documented how the players were denied admission to a local Grand Rapids City League by the Calvin faculty and administration, struggled for practice time in the new on-campus gymnasium, and received little fan support from the student body.</p><p>Over the next 30 years, women’s basketball continued to be the primary offering for female student-athletes. Not until the 1950s did sports like tennis, team archery, and softball join the fray.</p><h2>The Rise of a Legacy</h2><p>New Jersey native <strong>Doris Zuidema ’62</strong> stood out as a star student- athlete during that era. Zuidema played four years of women’s basketball while also competing in team archery and tennis. Her athleticism and commitment to women’s athletics as an undergraduate set the stage for a notable coaching and administrative career.</p><p>Zuidema returned to Calvin in 1964 and served for the next 32 years as a professor, coach, and athletics administrator. For 13 years, she led women’s basketball while also coaching archery, tennis, field hockey, and golf.</p></div><div class="column"><p>“We had some wonderful athletes,” Zuidema said. “We didn’t always have prime access to facilities or the means of travel like the men’s teams did. We had to fight for everything we had, but we continued to grow and expand.”</p><p>Serving as Calvin’s first women’s athletic director, Zuidema broke barriers and opened new doors for female college athletes. She played a key role in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (AIAW) and guided Calvin women’s athletics into the Women’s Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (WMIAA).</p><p>In 1978, the WMIAA merged with the MIAA to form a unified, single-league structure. Zuidema proceeded to help open five more sports to Calvin’s female student-athletes: swimming and diving, track and field, cross country, golf, and soccer.</p><h2>Champions in the Making</h2><p>By the early 1980s, women’s athletics teams began to make their mark on a regular basis. The softball team, led by pitching stalwarts such as <strong>Sharon Boeve DeKleine ’85</strong> and <strong>Laura Vroon Knapp ’84</strong>, advanced to the AIAW Division III World Series, hosting the event at the nearby Christian Reformed Recreation Center. Led by head coach Karla Wolters, Calvin advanced to its first NCAA III World Series in 1984.</p><p>Wolters also coached the Calvin women’s volleyball team, which placed fourth in the nation in 1984. In 1986, a senior-laden team led by All-Americans <strong>Julie Scholten Dykstra ex’87</strong>, <strong>Leah Calsbeek Schipper ’87</strong>, and <strong>Roxane Helmus Steenhuysen ’87</strong> advanced to the national semifinals. Playing in front of a standing-room only crowd of nearly 4,000 fans, the Knights took two of the first three sets only to lose the match in a five-set heartbreaker.</p><p>Current Calvin head women’s volleyball coach and associate director of athletics <strong>Amber Blankespoor Warners ’90</strong> was a starting freshman setter on the team and remembers the community impact of the event, despite the heartbreak.</p></div><div class="column"><p>“The crowd was electric,” Warners recalled. “One of the things that I took with me after that weekend were the comments from people who were amazed at the excitement of a women’s collegiate athletic event. It rallied our community in a way that had not happened before. The community was accustomed to being rallied by its male athletes, so this was a first.”</p><h2>A National Championship Team Breaks Away</h2><p>In 1993, <strong>Renea Bluekamp Walkotten ’95</strong> led Calvin to its first women’s national championship, by winning the individual cross country title. It marked the start of a Calvin women’s cross country surge led by head coach <strong>Nancy Meyer ’78</strong>.</p><p>Meyer flourished as a student-athlete in the 1970s, playing varsity volleyball and softball. She returned to Calvin as a professor and coach in 1979. She coached several sports over the years but left her strongest mark on women’s cross country.</p><p>In 1998, she led Calvin to its first women’s team national championship, marking a historic milestone. Meyer’s Knights repeated the feat in 1999.</p></div><div class="column"><h2>Women's Volleyball Serves History</h2><p>Meyer, who was appointed women’s athletic director in 1996, supported the Calvin women’s volleyball team on its run to its first national title in 2010. The Knights again claimed women’s volleyball national crowns in 2013 and 2016.</p><p>By that time, women’s volleyball had established a strong fan following. In 2012 and 2013, Calvin competed in the national finals at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse, losing in five sets in the final in 2012 and winning in five sets the following year. Both years featured sellout crowds of 3,600, filled with the Calvin faithful.</p><h2>Still Setting the Standard</h2><p>Generations of Calvin’s female student-athletes have blazed new trails and redefined excellence. Calvin has produced multiple individual event national champions in track and field and swimming and diving. Multi-sport athletes <strong>Lisa Winkle Hammer ’07</strong> and <strong>Carissa Verkaik Ratliff ’13</strong> both earned the prestigious Josten’s Trophy in women’s basketball.</p><p>With Calvin in its sesquicentennial year as an institution, director of athletics, Jim Timmer, sums it up best. “Ƶ has been blessed by its women’s athletes, coaches, and teams. Their struggles, hard work, and achievements are woven into Calvin’s legacy.”</p></div></div></div></div></div> <div class="field field--name-field-provus-publish-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2025-12-08T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">Mon, 12/08/2025 - 12:00</time> </div> <span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_32 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="/spark/she-took-lead" data-a2a-title="She Took The Lead"><a href="#" class="a2a_button_facebook"><span class="a2a_label">Share this on Facebook</span></a><a href="#" class="a2a_button_twitter"><span class="a2a_label">Share this on Twitter</span></a><a href="#" class="a2a_button_linkedin"><span class="a2a_label">Share this on LinkedIn</span></a><a href="#" class="a2a_button_email"><span class="a2a_label">Share this on Email</span></a><a href="#" class="a2a_button_print"><span class="a2a_label">Print this</span></a></span> <div class="field field--name-field-provus-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/547" hreflang="en">Athletics</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News type</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/119" hreflang="en">Spark</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-featured field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Featured</div> <div class="field__item">No</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-feature-image field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Feature image</div> <div class="field__item"><div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Image</div> <div class="field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/wide/public/2025-12/DorisZuidemaFieldhockey1981-min.jpeg?itok=jRAjEVvs" width="1090" height="737" alt="DorisZuidemaFieldhockey1981" class="image-style-wide"> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-feature-image-caption field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div>Feature image caption</div> <div class="field__item"><p>1981 women's field hockey team</p></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-type field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Story Type</div> <div class="field__item">Student story</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-person field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Person</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/people/jeffrey-febus" hreflang="en">Jeffrey Febus</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-related-issue field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Related Issue</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/spark/issues/2025-winter" hreflang="en">2025-winter</a></div> </div> Mon, 01 Dec 2025 19:14:09 +0000 hp59@calvin.edu 39533 at Multiple Calvin teams NCAA Bound /stories/multiple-calvin-teams-ncaa-bound <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Multiple Calvin teams NCAA Bound</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>msk23@calvin.edu</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2025-11-11T15:18:58-05:00" title="Tuesday, November 11, 2025 - 15:18" class="datetime">Tue, 11/11/2025 - 15:18</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>It’s not technically tradition, but like clockwork every year multiple Calvin athletic teams extend their fall seasons well into November. This year is no different. Men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s cross country begin NCAA postseason action this coming weekend (November 14 &amp; 15) at their respective regional tournaments and meets. <em>(Note: The women’s volleyball team will find out if it’s NCAA Bound following the MIAA tournament this weekend.)</em></p><h3>Consistent success</h3><p>Calvin has seen much success on the national stage, claiming 11 NCAA Division III National Titles, 54 top four finishes, and 27 national runners-up. While those statistics are impressive in and of themselves, what situates Calvin as one of the premiere programs in all of Division III athletics is its commitment to holistic success, demonstrated by having 166 Academic All-Americans, which <a href="https://academicallamerica.com/documents/2023/7/25//AAA_Who_has_the_most.pdf?id=4429">ranks the program</a> within the Top 10 in Division III and in the Top 30 across all NCAA Divisions.<br><br>Follow all of the Knights’ teams competing in NCAA postseason action November 14 &amp; 15. His dad went to Calvin. His mom went to Hope. Making his college decision process even more complicated is that in his words “both schools have fantastic pre-med programs.” So, he had a tough decision. So, he visited both schools.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>And the visit made all the difference. “When I visited Hope, the scenery was nice, but I didn’t feel that family aspect that I did at Calvin.”&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>This summer, Dykema jumped into the college experience through the <a href="/college-access-programs/entrada-scholars-program">Entrada Scholars Program</a>—earning college credits and a renewable $4,000 scholarship in the process.</p><h4>What is your greatest takeaway from this experience?</h4><p>I came into this just looking forward to money [scholarship] and class credit, but I made friendships and relationships that I’ll have for the rest of my life. And I know going into this school year I don’t have to be worried about who I’m going to meet. Yes, I’ll meet new people, but I’ll have friends to go to in my first week of school as a rock, and I also grew a lot in my faith throughout Entrada and I’m reading my Bible a lot more, because there’s a drive, everyone here cares so deeply that it makes you want to feel that same feeling. God has really spoken to me through everyone here.</p><h4>Because of Entrada, I feel more confident in …&nbsp;</h4><p>My ability to spread joy. I think through both meeting new people and learning more about Jesus Christ I saw that there’s a lot of love that goes around and especially in different cultures. Learning about different cultures allows you to grow and kind of express your willingness to learn new things, and I think that joy comes with that because it brings joy spending time with people. Humans like to communicate, we like to spend time with others, and I’ve done a lot of that during my time in Entrada and that’s brought me a lot of joy and I’m better capable of spreading joy to other people now.</p><h4>How would you have felt had you not had this experience before college?&nbsp;</h4><p>I would have been terrified because I was already nervous going into Entrada and that’s just a month, so I can’t imagine thinking about a whole year where I’d be jumping right into the deep end. But now I’ve gotten this gradual increase into college where I know what the campus looks like, I know a lot of people, I know kind of how the coursework lines up and different tests, exams, so I feel much more prepared and ready for college now and I’m not anxious or stressed because I’ve learned God will provide and He will straighten my paths even if I’m worried. I’m definitely more confident now.</p><h4>Anything else you’d like to add?&nbsp;</h4><p>I think definitely a lot of people, including myself, were kind of wanting it just to be over early on, and as time went by it started moving too quickly. Hold on, hold on, I don’t want to leave yet. It was kind of switch over. I was open to meeting new people, open to new activities. In beginning, I wanted to get home to my family, to my girlfriend, now it’s like ‘wow, this is already over?’ Just take advantage of all the opportunities you get for whole group activities, individual with other people study times, those are times where you grow with people. And if you are just secluding yourself, you won’t get that sense of family that Entrada is.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-provus-publish-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2025-07-31T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">Thu, 07/31/2025 - 12:00</time> </div> <span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_32 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="/stories/qa-entrada-grad-landon-dykema" data-a2a-title="Q&amp;A with Entrada grad Landon Dykema"><a href="#" class="a2a_button_facebook"><span class="a2a_label">Share this on Facebook</span></a><a href="#" class="a2a_button_twitter"><span class="a2a_label">Share this on Twitter</span></a><a href="#" class="a2a_button_linkedin"><span class="a2a_label">Share this on LinkedIn</span></a><a href="#" class="a2a_button_email"><span class="a2a_label">Share this on Email</span></a><a href="#" class="a2a_button_print"><span class="a2a_label">Print this</span></a></span> <div class="field field--name-field-provus-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/603" hreflang="en">admissions</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/612" hreflang="en">School of Health</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/547" hreflang="en">Athletics</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News type</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/116" hreflang="en">News and Stories</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-featured field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Featured</div> <div class="field__item">No</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-feature-image field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Feature image</div> <div class="field__item"><div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Image</div> <div class="field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/wide/public/2025-07/LandonDykemaCalvinUniversityEntradaScholarsProgram.jpg?itok=IIwDEVFb" width="1090" height="545" alt="Landon Dykema" class="image-style-wide"> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-feature-image-caption field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div>Feature image caption</div> <div class="field__item"><p>In 2025, Landon Dykema will begin studying pre-med and playing volleyball at Ƶ.</p></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-related-news field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Related news</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/stories/qa-entrada-grad-emma-rodriguez" hreflang="en">Q&amp;A with Entrada grad Emma Rodriguez </a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/stories/qa-entrada-grad-kwesi-abban" hreflang="en">Q&amp;A with Entrada grad Kwesi Abban </a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/stories/qa-entrada-grad-rayn-rutley" hreflang="en">Q&amp;A with Entrada grad Rayn Rutley</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-type field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Story Type</div> <div class="field__item">Student story</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-person field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Person</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/people/matthew-kucinski" hreflang="en">Matthew Kucinski</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Departments</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/academics/school-health" hreflang="en">School of Health</a></div> </div> </div> Thu, 31 Jul 2025 19:45:17 +0000 msk23@calvin.edu 38100 at Ƶ Breaks Ground on First On-Campus Football Field /stories/calvin-university-breaks-ground-first-campus-football-field <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Ƶ Breaks Ground on First On-Campus Football Field</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>msk23@calvin.edu</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2025-05-22T09:39:51-04:00" title="Thursday, May 22, 2025 - 09:39" class="datetime">Thu, 05/22/2025 - 09:39</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Ƶ has officially broken ground on its first-ever on-campus football and lacrosse field, marking a major milestone in the continued development of its football and lacrosse programs and enhancing the overall student experience. With 25 years of experience building and directing marching bands, Sudduth brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep passion for connecting music programs with their communities.</p><p>Steve Sudduth began his career in 1999 and has successfully established and led marching bands at various institutions, including Dickinson State University in North Dakota. His extensive experience includes starting bands from the ground up, making him well suited to lead Calvin’s new initiative.</p><h3>Creating Connections</h3><p>“Marching bands hold a special place in the heart of a community,” said Sudduth. “They create a strong connection between the university and the public, offering a window into the vibrancy of a school’s music program. A successful marching band can uplift the identity of an institution and become a cherished tradition.”</p><p><a href="/people/tiffany-engle">Dr. Tiffany Engle</a>, associate professor; co-chair, visual and performing arts; director of instrumental studies, expressed excitement about the new addition to the <a href="/academics/school-humanities-arts-and-social-sciences/music">university's music offerings</a>. “This marching band represents an exciting expansion of our music program. It will elevate the student experience and create lasting connections within Calvin. We believe that the band will quickly become a source of pride for our students, faculty, and alumni under Steve's direction.”</p><h3>Building on a Tradition of Excellence</h3><p>Sudduth emphasizes that the creation of this marching band is not just about music; it’s about building a lasting legacy. “For many years, Calvin has excelled in formal music programs, but the philosophy of a marching band has yet to be fully implemented. Our goal is to incorporate this new program into the very fabric of the university’s music tradition,” he explained.</p><p>The new marching band at Calvin will serve as a dynamic and visible representation of the university, contributing to the campus atmosphere like a successful athletic team. Sudduth is confident that the program will grow in size and impact, potentially reaching 60 to 80 members within three years.</p><p>When asked why he chose to join Ƶ, Sudduth highlighted the university’s reputation and the opportunity to reconnect with his family, who are settled in the Grand Rapids area. “Calvin is a respected institution, and this job allows me to contribute to a new tradition while staying close to home,” he said.</p><h3>Gaining Momentum</h3><p>Sudduth <a href="https://www.wzzm13.com/video/news/education/calvin-university-launches-new-marching-band-program/69-ca310718-a247-4eb1-b05e-7f70a6ca3f9c">plans to build the program gradually</a>, starting small but aiming for excellence. He also stressed the importance of incorporating faith into the marching band experience. “Music is a gift from God,” he said. “Our performances will reflect the belief of that power in music and provide that to the university in our performances.”</p><p>The excitement surrounding the new marching band is already palpable. “I’m most looking forward to seeing the joy and enthusiasm on the faces of our students as they participate in something new and meaningful,” Sudduth shared.</p><p>Ƶ invites students, alums, and the community to support this exciting new chapter in the university’s history. <a href="/people/steve-sudduth">Contact Sudduth</a> for more information.</p></div> <div class="field field--name-field-provus-publish-date field--type-datetime field--label-hidden field__item"><time datetime="2024-08-27T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">Tue, 08/27/2024 - 12:00</time> </div> <span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_32 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="/stories/calvin-university-launches-new-marching-band-program-led-veteran-director" data-a2a-title="Ƶ Launches New Marching Band Program Led by Veteran Director"><a href="#" class="a2a_button_facebook"><span class="a2a_label">Share this on Facebook</span></a><a href="#" class="a2a_button_twitter"><span class="a2a_label">Share this on Twitter</span></a><a href="#" class="a2a_button_linkedin"><span class="a2a_label">Share this on LinkedIn</span></a><a href="#" class="a2a_button_email"><span class="a2a_label">Share this on Email</span></a><a href="#" class="a2a_button_print"><span class="a2a_label">Print this</span></a></span> <div class="field field--name-field-provus-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/556" hreflang="en">music</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/557" hreflang="en">visual and performing arts</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/547" hreflang="en">Athletics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/558" hreflang="en">marching band</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News type</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/116" hreflang="en">News and Stories</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-featured field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Featured</div> <div class="field__item">Yes</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-feature-image field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Feature image</div> <div class="field__item"><div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Image</div> <div class="field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/wide/public/2024-08/MarchingBandDirectorSteveSudduthCalvinUniversity.jpg?itok=iQjxyoM1" width="1090" height="545" alt="Steve Sudduth, marching band director at Ƶ" class="image-style-wide"> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-type field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Story Type</div> <div class="field__item">Faculty story</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-person field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Person</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/people/john-zimmerman" hreflang="en">John Zimmerman</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-departments field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Departments</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/academics/school-humanities-arts-and-social-sciences/music" hreflang="en">Music</a></div> </div> </div> Tue, 27 Aug 2024 17:52:47 +0000 msk23@calvin.edu 35658 at Football Team Awestruck By Locker Room Reveal /stories/football-team-awestruck-locker-room-reveal <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Football Team Awestruck By Locker Room Reveal </span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>msk23@calvin.edu</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-08-13T21:00:56-04:00" title="Tuesday, August 13, 2024 - 21:00" class="datetime">Tue, 08/13/2024 - 21:00</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>“Woah!”&nbsp;</p><p>“I like this.
