Field Study in Hawaii

Winter Intensive
This course is a field-based study of the geology, geography, and environmental challenges of the Hawaiian Islands. Hawaii is a volcanic archipelago and the safest place in the world to observe ongoing volcanic activity and volcanic landforms.

Hawai`i offers unusually rich cultural variety deriving from the original Polynesians inhabitants and the various immigrant groups, many from Asia, who brought their cultures with them and contributed to the rich cultural hybrid that is contemporary Hawaii. Furthermore, Hawaii鈥檚 remote location in the middle of the Pacific Ocean creates unique challenges for making a living and finding sustainable sources of food, water, and energy. This course involves challenging hikes in rough terrain and will also include opportunities for snorkeling.
